Every Mother Counts

Every Mother Counts (EMC) is a nonprofit organization founded in 2010 by Christy Turlington Burns after experiencing childbirth complications herself. The organization is dedicated to ensuring that pregnancy and childbirth are safe for every mother, everywhere. EMC works to raise awareness about the global maternal health crisis, where hundreds of thousands of women, particularly in underserved communities, face life-threatening complications due to lack of access to quality maternity care. The organization emphasizes that nearly all maternal deaths are preventable with timely medical support, proper healthcare infrastructure, and trained professionals.

To achieve its mission, EMC funds and supports community-based programs in countries such as the U.S., Guatemala, Tanzania, and Bangladesh, focusing on improving access to maternity care, midwifery training, and emergency medical transportation. The nonprofit also advocates for policy changes to improve maternal health rights and mobilizes resources through fundraising, partnerships, and awareness campaigns. By collaborating with healthcare providers, policymakers, and donors, EMC strives to create systemic changes that ensure equitable maternal healthcare for all women, regardless of their location or socioeconomic status.
